It prefers part sun, but will tolerate full sun, and will be happy in a wide range of soils as long as it doesn't have wet feet. The berries and leaves produce an oil that is known to repel mosquitos as effectly as DEET, according to studies. The purple berries are edible to humans and enjoyed by many birds and mammals. Berries appear in late summer and last into the fall, and put on a show. It is an important nectar plant as well as being a host to many species of caterpillars.
