This small tree doesn't typically grow much taller than 20 feet. It prefers to grow in soil that is high in organic matter and is slightly acidic to neutral. Although commonly planted in full sun, they are understory trees that prefer some shade. Avoid afternoon sun. Its white flowers emerge March through May. There's a chance that you may get pink flowers on your dogwood, as that is a naturally occuring variety. The red berries provide a food source for birds in late summer though the fall. Being a host plant for many species of caterpillars, it is also a nectar source for a few specialized bee species.
