This small tree typically doesn't get much larger than 20' tall. It prefers morning sun, with protection from the strong afternoon heat but will tolerate a wide range of soil conditions. Its showy white flowers bloom March through April attracting many pollinators. The dark purple berries are ready to be consumed by people starting around May, that's if you can get to them before the birds. It's a host species for the Viceroy caterpillar and Red-spotted Purple caterpillar.
