This medium sized evergreen tree can grow to be 35 feet tall and 20 feet wide. It grows best in full sun, but can tolerate shade and is tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions. It's fragrant white blooms emerge in March through April, attracting a wide range of pollinators. The berries are sought out by many birds and mammals in September and October. It is a Keystone Species to 300+ butterfly species.
Caution should be taken when planting this outside of it's native range. It has shown to be a bit weedy, shading out native vegetation. It's native to Coastal NC. Click to view its range in North Carolina.
