This medium sized tree can grow to be 60 feet tall and 40 feet wide. Growing best in full sun to part shade, it will tolerate a wide range of soil types from moist to dry, acidic to neutral pH, and various soil compositions. The small fragrant flowers bloom in early spring, attracting a wide range of pollinators. The berries that mature in late summer attract many birds and mammals including Bluebirds, Quail, Pileated Woodpecker, Black Bear, and Beavers. It is a host plant to many caterpillars including the Spicebush Swallowtail and Imperial Moth. In the fall, the tree looks as if it's on fire with yellows, oranges, and reds mixing together on the tree.
