This large tree rarely gets to over 100' but can under the right conditions. It prefers full sun, but will tolerate a bit of shade. It grows in a wide range of soil conditions, but doesn't like it too wet. This is one of, if not the most, ecologically valuable plant species in the world. Being a host to over 500 different species of insects, a food source for a wide range of mammals including everything from chipmunks to bears, and feeding many different bird species including the rare Pileated Woodpecker, Bluejays, wild turkey, etc.
